Hello! I'm helping my dad decide on a new tractor. Honestly I really no nothing about tractors, but dad knows nothing about internet! He is currently considering the Kubota B2100, JD 4100, New Holland TC21, and also a used '95 Ford 1520. Here's the situation, he's got 5 acres of land to mow and a quarter mile drive to plow in the winter. Would like to know which would probably work best for the price. The Ford has 430hrs on it, a front loader, and a grater box. Asking $12500, is that a reasonable price? He would have to put a mid mount mower deck on the Ford as well. I see lots of knowledgable people on this board and would appreciate any input you can provide. Thanks for all your help!!

I own a Cub 7260; however, I looked at the B2100, the JD4100 and TC21 when I was in the shopping stage.These tractor models are all great and evenly matched (probably not what you want to hear as advice). It will come to personal tastes, dealer friendliness, etc.Oh yes, they are well suited for the 5 acres and plowing you describe. ....

I looked into 4100 vs. 1700 / 2100 / 2400 this spring - we don't have a good boomer dealer locally. Found that prices of 4100 and 1700 were the same (about 12600 with loader, gear trans.) 2100 was $1000 more. stepping up to 2400HST or JD 4200 gear added $2500 to cost. Ended up with the 4100 gear + turf tires. We've been v.happy with it so far - count on buying something to hang off the back end if you use the loader (unless you like excitement). ....

Jeremy,I would suggest looking into the CTB's archives for additional advise in this area. This very dilema has been posted a hundred times. I also fit into the category of not having a close NH dealer. And the closest one has an attitude. But that shouldn't be a reflection on any dealer from your area. I would advise to go 20hp and larger, thus removing the B1700. One thing I like about Kubota's B series is the availability to go 17-21-24hp in the same layout/size platform. We personally liked the JD 4100 better than anything out there. That doesn't mean its the best for your father. If I had to put a finger on anything bad about the 4100, it would be Current availability and no Back-hoe option. Other than that I felt it met our needs the best not only in functions, but in creature comfort as well. Which to us, is important for the # of hours spent on it. My best advise is to demo your selections. Charts and brochures will only take you so far. The rest has to be done with your butt in the seat. If I have to vote, its the 4100 HYDROSTATIC, I wouldn't consider a Gear tranny, but that is our preference. But expect to pay more for the convenience/features it offers. No doubt you will get plenty of replies on this one. I don't know too much about the TC21 or the Ford as there aren't any dealers close to me. The price for the Ford doesn't sound too bad to me for a tractor at this end of the market but some of the other guys will have a much better idea of a fair price than I do. I looked at the Kubota and Deere when I was shopping just a short time ago and they are both excellent machines. A couple of things to bear in mind when talking about the JD 4100 : 1) If your dad will ever need a backhoe for any reason, you'll have to go someplace else because JD doesn't make one for the 4100. 2) Get a guarantee on the delivery because 6 weeks to 6 months isn't unheard of at the moment. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot to choose between them. There are differences ofcourse but they are relatively minor and it depends on what your dad likes as far as pedal positioning, etc. Unless you can get an increadible deal someplace it'll probably boil down to your particular color preference and the dealer at the end of the day. Don't underestimate the value of a good dealer. If he's really helpful, it may be worth a few dollars more to do business with him 'cos he can save you a lot of aggrivation and frustration over the life of the tractor. I personally chose the Kubota B2400 mainly because of the delivery on the JD4100 (a couple more horses over the B2100 for a few dollars more) and have been very happy with it. It's done everything I've wanted of it.If you don't have too many trees and stuff to mow around, I'd consider a rear mounted mower instead of the belly mower. It'll do the job every bit as well and will save you a few hundred dollars. ....

I faced the exact same decision roughly three months ago. I also threw the 24 hp Kubota into the mix as it was comparable in price. I have the luxury of having several dealerships of all three brands close by so pricing and servicing was also a consideration for me. I finally made my decision after picking up literature on all three and doing a side by side comparison. My biggest concern about the JD 4100 was it seemed as though there wasn't as many implement options available as the others. I went with the NH TC21d and have been well pleased with only one exception: The TC21d is a narrow tractor and I use mine (with a front loader) to move dirt, rock, sand, etc. I have noticed on several occassions, and especially on uneven terrain, the tractor seems a little unstable with a fair amount of weight in the loader. For this reason alone, I have considered moving up to the larger frame 25-33 hp Boomers. Best of luck to you... ....
